Every day after school, The Baldwin Center opens its doors to welcome Pontiac students of all ages. Baldwin, which serves as a public community warming center, is also home to a growing after school program.
The program, coordinated by the non-profit's director Lauren Fuller, provides the children with after school snacks, individual tutoring on homework and various extracurricular activities. Baldwin strives to be a nurturing and friendly environment where Pontiac kids can spend their time safely after school. The program’s home is a former church on Baldwin Road in Pontiac, Mich.
Volunteers, many of which are Oakland University students, are essential to the success of the tutoring and the clubs that the children participate in. Homework is a priority at Baldwin. The students must complete it with the aid of a tutor before joining in any club activities.
The clubs cover a wide variety of subjects like creative writing, art, engineering, dance and gardening. At Baldwin, students have the chance to explore these subjects that do not appear in their regular school curriculum. The students learn to play musical instruments, write poetry and build rockets.
Baldwin is highly important to the students who attend the program. It is not only a place to have fun and make friends, but it is a place to stay safe within the city. The students build relationships with their teachers, who inspire them to see that they can succeed despite the doubts of others.
The program at Baldwin aims to empower the students to reach deep into their creativity to create beautiful and meaningful futures.
